What is the shadowing technique?

Shadowing is a speaking exercise: you listen to a native speaker and repeat what they say almost at the same moment, like their shadow. It trains your ear and your mouth together, so you pick up the speaker’s sounds, rhythm and intonation, not just their words.

Where shadowing comes from

Conference interpreters have used shadowing for decades to practise listening and speaking at once. Language learners adopted it because it forces you to process real-speed speech and produce it immediately. Speech researchers measured that the best shadowers stay only about a quarter of a second behind the speaker; the closer you can follow without losing words, the closer your listening and pronunciation are to the original.

How to do shadowing in English, step by step

  1. Pick material at your level: a clear speaker, one to three minutes, with English captions.
  2. Listen first without speaking, and make sure you understand it.
  3. Repeat line by line: hear a sentence, then say it after it ends.
  4. Then shadow: play the line and speak with the speaker, copying rhythm, pauses and stress.
  5. Slow down, then speed up: start at 0.75×, then go back to normal speed.
  6. Record yourself and compare. You can’t hear your own mistakes while speaking, but you will hear them next to the original.

Does shadowing work?

For pronunciation, rhythm and listening speed, yes, as long as the material is close to your level and you check yourself. Shadowing without feedback tends to turn into mumbling. That is why Sada scores every take word by word and shows how far behind the speaker you were, and why it keeps your first try so you can hear it against your latest.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing speech far too fast for your level.
  • Practising without recording, so you never find your mistakes.
  • Playing the video out loud while recording — wear headphones so the microphone hears only you.
  • One long session a week instead of ten minutes a day.

Questions people ask

How long should I shadow each day?

Ten to twenty minutes a day beats an hour once a week. One minute of a video a day adds up within weeks.

What is the difference between shadowing and repeating?

Repeating means you say a line after it ends; shadowing means you speak at the same time as the speaker. Start by repeating, then move to shadowing.

Is shadowing good for IELTS speaking?

It helps the fluency and pronunciation parts of the score, because it trains you to say whole sentences at natural speed with natural stress.
